There's only one way I read the messaging from the EBU at the moment: 1) We know this may happen again and we cannot have the responsibility be on one plate, so we've invented another role to split the responsibility for if it happens again. Considering Österdahl was the only one carrying the responsibility, we understand what he tried to do and defend his overseeing of the decisions made in 2024. 2) We will consult the *participating broadcasters* whether they want a certain country in or not. We can safeguard Israel's 'non-political' participation in this case, since only Iceland was discussing Israel's participation before the contest and was the only one to potentially act on it. Note the focus on the word *agreed* list of participants: this indicates that they are still behind their decision to include Israel and inherently holds that all other *participating broadcasters* did the same. 3) We will simplify the rules and code of conduct and make it entirely unambiguous, so we can actually hold artists accountable. Not only that, we will transfer this accountability to the delegations proper: if the artist does something that is *according to us* not in line with the rules or code of conduct, we have the freedom to punish the entire delegation, as the delegation will not have reeled in their artist. It is basically another way of saying: we acknowledge that others tried to ruin our party, and the responsibility is fully theirs. We will just make it unambiguous now with our new setup. It is actually rather disappointing, because in practice it means that artists and delegations will feel even more scrutiny as we move ahead.

No mention about EBU's hypocrisy. They banned a song from Georgia (We don't want put in) yet, they did allow (1944) from Ukraine. In the latest Eurovision in Israel, EBU threatened to ban Iceland on the ground that their artists show messages in favour of Palestine, while in the same time, the background dancers for Madonna (specially invited by the Israeli broadcaster) show anti-palestinian flags. EBU didn't mention that. It's rules for some, rules for others. Hypocrisy.😡

Instead, there should be fewer participants to make it more manageable, there are far too many participants. A more compact esc is much better, a maximum of 25 countries.

I'm really concerned with the future of Eurovision. We really need to be careful with banning countries because of political events. As the saying goes, he who is without sin cast the first stone. Sure almost all of the participating countries competing in ESC disagreed with Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Where is the line? If France sends troops to put down a rebellion in a former colony. Should France be banned? Why not? Would Ukraine be banned if a missile attack on Russia hit a civilian target and killed hundreds? Israel claims they are trying to eliminate Hamas in Gaza to stop murders and missile attacks in to Israel? Yet Italy refuses to aid refugee boats crossing from Africa - thousands have died. All I'm saying is once you start down this road, you risk losing the event. Next ban countries that don't allow gay marriage? Woman's right to choose? Allows fox hunts? etc. etc.

People say that Joost is actually trolling us all and that he really got hurt because of the qualification to the point he went back to therapy. Idk man, this is so confusing. At least let's hope Joost is going to be fine again ❤

Thank you for translating the statement into English. I must have read through it about five times the other day and still thought that it must have been written by Gus Hedges from Drop the Dead Donkey.

I read this as the EBU has its fingers crossed we will all forget 2024, I’m not forgetting it and right now I’m not watching or taking part as a fan, unless we get apologies for clearly wrong decisions then I’m out for good. The Netherlands should be give a free ridevyobthebginsl and an apology, the EBU should apologise for not protect Joist, they agreed no filming directly after his performance, so why wasn’t the woman who broke the agreement multiple times, get the sack before the final time she did it and caused Joost reaction ? Nothing in the statement about government’s buying adverts to target people not even watching the ESC to vote for their act. I think the statement is weak and it doing the least it can to appear like it is listening but it’s not. Martin Osterdahl needs to go and this statement ignores that. Very disappointed about this they really are Not understanding the strength of feeling that the EBU is completely out of touch.

Although I'm relieved they didn't use Martin as a scapegoat, fire him and leave everyone else unscathed. It's all well and good to announce new roles but it's all about who fills them. Kind of funny they've invented 5 new jobs just so they can say they didn't demote Martin. But yeah despite a corporate shakeup I don't really see how this report addresses anything really. But time will tell. I know that this is just a first step and artists including Bambie Thug are also involved in these investigations. This is the problem that we won't know how effective this actually is until May 2025.

Martin needs to go

The creation of an ESC Director role is an effective demotion for Österdahl. Some of his responsibilities have been taken away, he will have less political power, and he now has someone checking his work. From a people management perspective, this is the sort of thing you do when you want someone to exit themselves from the building.

One of the main issues for me is the sponsorship of the contest. With 'Morrocan Oil' having been the main sponsor for the last three years, we have to question the fairness of Israel's treatment by the EBU. If we'd had a Russian sponsor, would Russia have been allowed to compete in 2022? It seems unfair that a company sponsoring the contest *may* give that company's country some advantage. Maybe we need a company from the host country to sponsor the event each year. I personally feel bad about watching the contest again while it's being sponsored by Morrocan Oil and I have a feeling that was the main reason why Israel were treated differently this year to how Russia was treated in 2022. Money talks and money decides, too. I'm crossing my fingers for ESC in 2025 🤞

Hearing this statement gave me huge "We're gonna do our best to make sure you guys won't make the same mistakes again." Absolutely zero recognition that they've made mistakes, that they've failed the people that were counting on them. Instead they're gaslighting the delegations, artists and even the audience. Wanting to bring a 'show that's appealing for a broad audience of all ages' and 'holding up the ESC values' at this point is so vague I am inclined to even interpret it more like 'we WILL make sure that next year we have the rules in place that allows us to get rid of your non-binary flags'.

Just an update to this, after this video got posted I read that the NRK for Norway have confirmed that they WILL take part in Eurovision 2025 now that the EBU have issued out this statement. Though they do stress that there are further things that they wish to be addressed and worked on, but are seeming more positive now than before!

I have Virgin Media TV and an ageing Freeview box in a bedroom which struggles for reception. I desperately need a Freely 'stick' and would happily spend £50 for it, but I'm not buying a new TV, that's so wasteful.

The Netherlands has been there from the start of this annual contest, as one of the first 7 countries together with Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and Italy. As a Dutch person it would be sad to not have an Eurovision song contest participant from my country next year since it's good enteretainment. I grew up With this show every year and watched it with my parents when i was a kid. It was a yearly tradition for me to watch this event. But this year left me with mixed feelings. The way this year went damaged the support of this country to the event a lot, and to make that up, the eurovision song contest needs to do more than these statements. I can totally understand and support Avrotros, in their decision whatever they chose to do next year. These changes to me feel more like a way to get a lightening rod for the backlash if a bad descision is made, so the persons who made it don't get the blame but the new director gets the backlash instead. But lets see how this plays out... Switzerland is a great country and i hope they get the room to fix things.

To the question in an interview with Swedish radio, that if Joost would apply for participation in 2025, EBU boss Jean-Philip De Tender said “…..he seen no reason why Joost would be excluded” That’s a strange statement to say the least. Especially given the fact that the (court) investigation hasn’t yet been completed!!!

No matter of the changes i think most of us can agree that the ebu flopped up this year. Its too late for them.

I'm working on a similar video of my own and we have some crossover and some differences of opinion. The investigation was done by Pernille Gaardbo brw. And maybe you've already seen by now, but Norway have confirmed for 2025. Netherlands are still waiting but sounding more positive.

all this just makes me super sad, I dont whant any country to leave (include mine), its hard to enjoy eurovision now with all these thoughts in my head, if my country dose leave eurovision idk if I will still be able to enjoy the contest anymore, its a part of the fun seeing your country qualify and do well in the final, as a latvian I waited many years to finaly see us qualify, and now possibly I will never see it again

Now, come thinking about it, the ESC 2024 was such a mess that maybe, just maybe a hard reboot would be for the best - the contest should take 1-2 years off and start from scratch. And it's not the end of the world if there's no Eurovision Song Contest to be quite frank - there are other music festivals with a similar premise that could fill the void. Like, for example, the Sanremo Music Festival, which predates the ESC and was the main inspiration for the creation of the ESC in first place. Other shows that are basically the national ESC selections like Melfest, UMK, Eesti Laul, MGP, Dora and Benidorm Fest to name a few have also gained a large following and could look to add some international flavour if they want to expand beyond their countries of origin. The statement from the EBU is pretty vague and has more questions than answers. Yeah, they're reshuffling the backstage responsibilities by creating new divisions and positions of power, but how does this convince AVROTROS to not pull the plug? How does this help securing more participating countries when the costs are getting even higher and for a broadcaster as small as San Marino's, Moldova's or Bulgaria's is going to be unsustainable to send entries every year with diminishing returns? And I'll not touch on whether or not countries that are in an active war like Israel or Ukraine should be even allowed to enter, because that's a whole other can of worms that is far too complex to be understood. And the EBU needs to stop bashing us in the heads with the 'Eurovision is an apolitical event' horsecr@p, because even a toddler knows that is not true and the ESC has been political from Day 1. For me Conchita Wurst's win in 2014 is political, so is Jamala's in 2016. I hear also the 'think of the children' argument in regards to the third paragraph. I mean, sure, some acts were 'too hot for TV' like with the staging for both Spain and UK's performances while Ireland's performance isn't everyone's cup of coffee and the same goes for Finland's. And perhaps the EBU may be looking at this as well - don't get me wrong, I like silly songs and/or performances from time to time, but sometimes a line needs to be drawn on what is acceptable and what's not. Or maybe we'll see a 4Kids version of the ESC (for those who didn't get it - 4Kids was a licensing company notorious for censoring Japanese Anime like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! for the English-dub versions)

Why blame Martin? We should blame the country's (Israel for example, NO HATE) leader for what they did(like invade a country just because religion. Actually, let's blame whoever invented religion, why can't everyone live in peace

The whole harassment thing with Israel isn't really helped with them causing their own issues toward Gaza and Palestine in recent times (even MORE not helped by a lot of people believing they're the war victims, despite the genocide being caused). Yes, their mixed reception to being a part of the event WAS acknowledged on the BBC live broadcast, but I doubt anything was made of it.

I still want to believe that I still am a fan of Eurovision. I didn't watch this year because of Israel still being there and I really don't want to abstain from watching it again because of them or any other active conflictor country that made things go too far not being ousted. Even the Portuguese public media, RTP, had complained about Israel harassing Iolanda, this year's Portuguese artist. It should NOT go on like this, definitely!
